Puttin’ on the Ritz is touring the U.K. from May 27th 2015, with a full supporting cast of West End singers and dancers.
For the opening weeks of the tour, Strictly Come Dancing dance professionals Kristina Rihanoff and Robin Windsor will star in the show. For the dates in Wimbledon and Newcastle, pop sensation and Strictly favourite, Pixie Lott, will star in the show, where she will sing and dance her way through some all time favourite songs. Pixie will be joined by her dance partner, Trent Whiddon. For dates up to the end of June, Kristina and Robin will head the show, with other exciting names from Strictly, to be announced.
Kristina Rihanoff took time out from her busy schedule to chat with me about Puttin’ On The Ritz.
You are performing in Puttin’ on the Ritz alongside Robin Windsor. what can you tell us about it?
The show is full of famous songs and it is wonderful to be joining this fabulous cast. It is a great opportunity for Robin and myself to go back to the good old days of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers – and create our own magic. We have a few solos and a big group opening number. It is exciting to be working with new music and choreography in the show. We also have some new dances to show off.
Can you tell us about rehearsals?
At this point Robin and I have to work hard putting these solos together with the music from the Gershwin era. It is unusual for us, as on Strictly most of the time we are dancing to contemporary music – which can be somewhat of a challenge, to dance a foxtrot or waltz to a modern song as we would like it to be more authentic. This is our opportunity to do our solos to authentic cha-cha-cha, samba and foxtrot and with songs that are famous and audiences love.
How does this production compare with others?
It is quite different, as the only other theatre show that we have done is Burn The Floor, where we were the lead couple. The choreography was not ours and was someone else’s vision of the dances. Puttin’ on the Ritz is where we choreograph all of our solos ourselves which is really exciting. It is also a touring show where we get to see a lot of the country and to perform in different places. We are also excited to work with Pixie Lott who’s also on the show with us for a few weeks. Puttin’ on the Ritz is travelling for a year but Robin and I are only doing 5 weeks. What are you looking forward to most about the show?
This is a perfect opportunity for us to show what we can do as choreographers. A big part of Strictly is that we choreograph all of our dance routines with our celebrities. In the past Robin and I did lots of group numbers for Strictly. For Puttin On The Ritz we are doing all of the choreography for our solos.
Why should everyone get along to see the show?
Firstly because it is a very famous show from the Gershwin era, that also has so much love from many people. It is kind of going to the heart of ballroom dancing. Anyone who loves Strictly and myself will have a perfect combination of both. Firstly the fans of Strictly will get to see Robin and I performing. Everyone that comes along to see the show will also see the music from that great era of music and dance. It is like a big extravaganza of music and dance. It will be a great evening celebrating that era – a little bit for everyone.
What next have you planned for 2015/16?
Robin and I are constantly working on new projects. Probably in 2016 we will be having our own tour around the country, and that is something that we have wanted to do for a very long time. This will be our production with our choreography, and our vision. We will also have extra dancers involved. We love working together creatively so this will be really exciting. We are constantly updating our music and our dance numbers. We go to other people to learn new lifts and tricks and things like that.
